Hungry for Wins
We created the Hungry for Wins campaign to promote the universal importance of good nutrition in the active lives of high school athletes, artists, leaders, and learners, with the aim of increasing participation in school meal programs. Hunger Impact Partners is piloting Hungry for Wins within Hennepin and Ramsey counties at schools that have high concentrations of students eligible for educational benefits*, high student enrollment numbers, and established athletic or enrichment programming. At Minneapolis Edison High School, for example, there are 783 students enrolled in federal nutrition meal programs. Although Edison runs Minnesota State High School League sports in each season and a large list of after-school clubs and activities, including College Possible, only seven percent of eligible students are participating in the after school supper program. Former Minneapolis Public Schools District Athletic Director and NBA world champion Trent Tucker is leading the Hungry for Wins campaign, advocating for students and working to engage community stakeholders. The program is intended as a model that can be replicated and spread throughout the state.
